Phantos workblog: pencils and inks

(cross-posted from Panel & Pixel)

I decided to take the first panel all the way to finished art, just to make sure my "I'm Making This Up As I Go Along" Photoshop drawing process would actually yield usable results:

1. Blocking in the major shapes, working out the proportions and composition.

2. With a smaller brush (and a different color), adding in more specific detail.

3. Now we get to the actual "ink" line, with a black, pressure-sensitive brush. (and yes, the building in the background was photo-referenced)

4. Lots of touching up, texturing, and spotting of blacks. Also added in the word balloons, drawn on a separate layer with the pen tool.

I'm pretty pleased with the results. I'm always worried that pages drawn on the computer will look... well, computer-y. But this looks a lot like one of my "analog" pages. Except the panel borders are straighter. :P
