Judge Dredd #7
Brian Bolland

The brilliant thing about Judge Dredd is that it works on two levels. It's both an action-packed, macho adventure comic and a scathing satire of action-packed, macho adventure comics. Likewise, Brian Bolland's artwork is simultaneously hyper-realistic and crazily surrealistic. They were made for each other. This cover is a perfect example: a stock superhero/sci-fi situation -- hero vs. dinosaur -- rendered as powerfully and dramatically as you could ever wish. But then Dredd's dialogue, with his incongruous bravado, completely punctures the seriousness of it. It reinforces Dredd's credentials as supreme alpha male badass, but with a wink and a nudge to remind us that the whole thing's really quite silly.
