12 Days of Classic Covers - Day 9

(see other peoples' choices here)

The Spirit 10/6/1946
Will Eisner

Has anyone ever drawn better femmes fatale than Eisner? Sultry, classy, and ever-so-slightly camp, like a classic screen siren captured in ink. This splash/cover sets the mood of the story perfectly -- the Middle Eastern setting; our intrepid hero, cautious but determined; and the dangerous dame around whom everything revolves. I love that gauzy curtain, the faux-Arabic logo, and P'Gell's invitation/challenge to the reader. A great design and an irresistible image.
