Eleventh Day of Classic Comics Christmas 2009
See everyone else's picks here. My Day 11 team is...
Steve Englehart and Sal Buscema
Captain America #169-175
An amazing run by a pair of creators who were totally in sync. The "Secret Empire" storyline is a classic, twisty conspiracy thriller, given extra juice by the way it reflected the issues of the day. The mysterious Committee to Regain America's Principles (love those initials!) works to undermine Captain America's reputation, just as the Nixon Administration was eroding the country's principles. And like the Watergate break-in, the deeper Cap probes the conspiracy, the higher-up it goes, until that audacious conclusion, where he confronts Number One in the Oval Office itself. In and around this commentary is plenty of slam-bang superhero action, with Cap and the Falcon working as a well-oiled (if occasionally contentious) team. For superhero adventure, it doesn't get much better than this.
