DC Villains #15: Robot Rampage

DC Villains
Episode 15:
"Robot Rampage!"
[Partly inspired by Metal Men #40 - "Destroy Doc Magnus" by Mike Sekowsky
and The Brave and The Bold #103 - "A Traitor Lurks Inside Earth" by Bob Haney]

Roll Call:
Bucky
Captain Republican
Chemical Lad
Mr. Roboto

Enjoying a rare day off from their government work, the Squad headed to the nearby town of St. Roch to grab brunch. As they finished off their eggs benedict, they spotted a strange disturbance down the street: a group of robots carrying protest signs, advocating for "Robots' Lib" and denouncing humans for treating machines as slaves. When the group spotted Mr. Robot among his teammates, they urged him to "throw off his chains" and join them. When he declined, they attacked. The group consisted of Cannon (a former servant of the A.I. called The Construct), Kra (deposed ruler of a planet of robots who sought to re-create his empire on Earth), Lightning (and his alternate form, Thunder, created by the villain known as Whirlicane), and Urthlo (built by Lex Luthor to destroy the Legion of Super-Heroes). After demonstrating his ability to neutralize their super-powers, Urthlo was a priority target and was taken down quickly. Captain Republican and Bucky, the team's melee fighters, didn't want to touch the electrified Lightning, and so bided their time until he switched to his sonic-powered Thunder form, which was bigger and stronger, but more amenable to being punched. Chemical Lad and Mr. Roboto took turns tearing up the energy-blasting Cannon and then finally the big-and-strong-but-not-otherwise-remarkable Kra fell to the team. The team examined the robots for some sign of a common origin, but found none. They reported the incident to their chief Amanda Waller, and then went on about their day.

[Loot Drops: Thunder Clap (Sonic Blast carrier attack), Urthlo Mask (Siphon: CPs of Super Abilities).]

The next day, Waller mustered the team for an emergency mission. The so-called "John Doe" mainframe, used to control and coordinate America's nuclear arsenal, was under attack. Submerged in the heart of a volcano, the fully-automated computer complex was supposed to be impregnable, but someone had managed to break in. The only access tunnel passed through the superheated lava stream. The Squad was sent down the tunnel in a high-speed rocket plane in hopes of minimizing their exposure to the heat, but they still took some damage en route.

Upon arrival, the Squad confronted the invaders: The Gas Gang, a group of robots, each with a different elemental power: Oxygen (rapid oxidation [Fire Blast]), Chloroform (sleepiness [Devitalization Ray]), Carbon Dioxide (dry ice creation [Ice Blast]), Carbon Monoxide (sickness [Poison/Venom], confusion [Emotion Control]), and Helium (buoyancy [Gravity Decrease]). Helium's attacks played particular havoc with Chemical Lad, and after being repeatedly slammed into the ceiling (and then falling back to the floor), he was knocked out. The other Squad members fared somewhat better, although the Middle Realm Soldier that had started tagging along with Captain Republican in the previous adventure became disoriented from Carbon Monoxide and began attacking targets at random, including Mr. Roboto. In the end, despite half the team being iced up by Carbon Dioxide, the Gas Gang were defeated and America's nukes were safe.

This time, examination of the robots confirmed their common origins: They were creations of Dr. Will Magnus, a scientist who had previously worked for the U.S., but had disappeared some months ago. The government believed, but could not prove, that he had been kidnapped by agents of the former Soviet Republic of Karnia. Evidently, Magnus was working for them, willingly or otherwise, to create weapons to be used against the rest of the world. Amanda Waller surmised that the "Robots' Lib" movement was part of the same plot, an attempt to recruit existing robots to the Karnia cause. Whatever the next stage of the plan was, it needed to be stopped. Waller ordered the Squad to head to Karnia and bring back Dr. Magnus by any means necessary.

Slipping into Karnia under cover of darkness, the team made their way to the Karnian Royal Palace. They were quickly spotted, and learned that Dr. Magnus was not just a pawn in this scheme, but the mastermind. Magnus gleefully recounted how the Karnians had kidnapped him and brainwashed him to become evil -- but the plan backfired, as his ambition was also unleashed, and he killed the Karnian Prime Minister and took control of the country. Now he had his eyes set on the rest of the world. He ordered his army of robot troops to attack, led by three of his most powerful creations: The shape-shifting android Inheritor, the walking nuclear reactor Plutonium Man, and the equally radioactive Uranium.

Captain Republican and Mr. Roboto tag-teamed Uranium, using the Gravity Belt they'd acquired in a previous mission to increase his mass, and then employing the Helium gas scavenged from the previous encounter to repeatedly send him careening into the ceiling. Nonetheless, he fought back with his Alpha-Beta-Gamma Particle attack [Power Blast with x3 Autofire] and did considerable damage to the team before going down in defeat. With him out of the way, Roboto and Chemical Lad turned on Plutonium Man, making sure to keep a healthy distance and pounding him with vibrational and acid attacks, respectively. Plutonium Man's nuclear fission beams [Disintegration Ray] took a toll on them, but in the end he also fell. Meanwhile, Captain Republican and Bucky traded blows with the Inheritor. The android's massive, hammer-like fists dealt heavy damage, but Bucky was able to use the rank and file robot troops to continually heal himself [Siphon: HP] and thus was able to outlast his opponent. With his main weapons defeated, Dr. Magnus surrendered. An annoyed Mr. Roboto suggested that they should just kill Magnus, to make sure he never perverted another robot to his ends. But in the end, they turned him back over to the U.S. government, in the hopes that he could be de-programmed.

[Loot Drops: Inheritor's Hammer (Heightened Attack), Plutonium Man's Hide (Absorption: Energy Attacks, becomes CPs of Disintegration Field), Uranium Chestplate (Armor).]

[The player characters earned 3 character points each, giving them a total of 145.]
