Day One of A Classic Comics Christmas
Once again, the gang at the CBR Classic Comics Board are participating in "12 Days of Classic Comics Christmas", where we pick our 12 favorites in a particular category. This year is "12 Favorite Newspaper Strips". You can see what everyone else chose here:

I admit, this was a tough one for me...I don't rate a lot of modern strips very highly, and I haven't read a lot of the old classics very extensively. Stuff like Pogo or Steve Canyon or Prince Valiant, I know mostly by reputation, so I wouldn't feel right putting them on my list. So this will be a pretty odd mix. My choice for day one is...

Axa
by Don Avenell and Enrique Romero
I really can't justify this pick on anything but aesthetic grounds -- it's beautifully-drawn, but pure b-movie schlock. The strip originally ran in the British tabloid paper The Sun from 1978-1986, but I discovered it later via the reprint volumes published by Ken Pierce. Axa is a young woman living in a futuristic domed city. She rebels against the sterile, regimented lifestyle there and flees to the wilderness outside, becoming a sword-wielding barbarian. The strip mixes sci-fi and fantasy, with an extra helping of cheesecake (I had a hard time finding a sample strip where Axa was fully dressed!).
Those of you who have seen my comic Glorianna may detect some influence. ;-)
