Unused Lady Spectra cover
Aug. 14th, 2007 01:41 pmIf you need a good laugh, check out what was originally going to be the cover of Fantasy Theater #18:

There's a good idea in there somewhere, but the execution... (shudder)

Fantasy Theater 18 home stretch
Apr. 17th, 2007 10:58 pmJust finished printing out the master copy of Fantasy Theater #18. Tomorrow it's off to the copy shop, and, fates willing, I'll have it in plenty of time for the SPACE show. Here's the cover by the amazing Will Terrell:
I was moping on AIM about how my original cover idea wasn't working out, and Will whipped this up for me in like two seconds. All bow before the might of Will!
Since this issue is all-Spectra & Sparky, I figured the gals were overdue for their own logo.
More info about the issue once it's officially released.

Spectra page in progress
Apr. 10th, 2007 10:38 pmI haven't talked about it here, because I hate to make promises I may not be able to keep... but I'm really trying to get a new FANTASY THEATER done in time for the SPACE con. The front half of the book is done: "The Song of the Siren", a Lady Spectra story written by me and drawn by Dan Kellaway. (I showed a preview page here a while back). I'm very pleased with the script, which (he said modestly) has some pretty sharp dialogue and a clever mystery angle. And Dan really delivered on the art.
The back half of the book will be another Spectra tale: "Cutody Battle", drawn by me with a script by Jason DeGroot. Although it wasn't planned this way, I think it makes a nice complement to the solidly traditional "Siren" story; "Custody Battle" is a bit more somber and introspective than is typical for the strip. Although you can't tell that by this kinda wacky splash page:

This partially-inked page gives you a pretty good idea of howcrappy loose my pencils are. I'm actually farther along than it looks; I tend to jump around a lot when I'm inking, finishing a figure here, a building there, and then jumping to another page. At this point almost every page has at least some ink on it. I feel pretty confident I can get it finished in time, but of course there's a million factors out of my control that could crop up and mess up the schedule. We shall see.

Not to oversell it or anything, but Oh My God, he totally nailed everything I asked for in the script. Youse guys are gonna love it. Here's an unlettered preview page (click to enlarge):

Slack is me
Aug. 28th, 2006 11:50 pmFinally got around to mailing out the comp copies of Fantasy Theater #17. So if you sent me a letter or fan art, or you're one of my usual trading buddies, or even (gasp) the one guy who actually sent cash money for a copy, look for it in your mailbox soonish. I look forward to everyone's comments, as this is kind of an oddball issue.

Aug. 15th, 2006 07:42 pmWoo! One of my favorite reviewers, Johanna Draper-Carlson, did a write-up of Fantasy Theater #17 in her usual tough-but-fair style:

And then the review got linked at the indispensible "When Fangirls Attack":

Scribble scribble
Jul. 7th, 2006 10:47 pmA sample of the "digital pencilling" I've been experimenting with lately:
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/35960567/
I doodle the linework in Photoshop, then bring the image into Illustrator to add the borders, lettering, and inks.
(And yeah, this kind of gives away the surprise I was trying to hide in that last page I previewed. But what the heck.)

I've been creatively blocked for a while... aside from that 4-page jam strip for T-Frags, I haven't managed to complete anything in months. Today, I finally got unstuck enough to polish off a Phantos script for an artist who's been inquiring about a collaboration.
(Five minute pause here while all the other writers in the audience throw tomatoes at me. Most writers have a terrible time finding an artist to work with, and I have all these really good people coming around asking for scripts that I can't seem to finish. Yes, I suck.)
Anyway, there's a 2-page excerpt under the cut.
( Phantos: Revenge of the Samurai )
I dunno, some aspects of this story may end up being controversial... not sure how people will react to the handicapped character. But otherwise, it's my usual Silver Age-y adventure yarn. Is it any good? Beats me. But it's DONE. Woo!
