This is a powerful cover by any measure, but even moreso when you take it into context. The Thor series had been kind of spinning its wheels for a good while. The stories and art weren't awful, but they'd lost a lot of the epic sweep and "anything can happen" excitement of the Kirby years. Simonson's cover announces in no uncertain terms that those days are over... everything is about to change! Not only has this bizarre alien usurper stolen Thor's hammer, he's even destroying his logo (and indeed, a sharp new logo debuted in the next issue). The combination of a cool-looking creature, explosive action, and the promised shake-up of the status quo (which Simonson delivered, in spades) make this one a classic.
