Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams
Batman #243-245

This one doesn't need much explanation, does it? The Batman character had been floundering a bit since the cancellation of that crazy, campy tv show. Enter Neal Adams, who brought a startling level of realism to this well-worn character, automatically making any story he drew seem more serious and "adult". And when he was paired with Denny O'Neil, a writer who also had ambitions of doing more grown-up material, the results were explosive. Batman's battle with Ra's Al Ghul, a stylish megalomaniac straight out of a James Bond movie, was pure pulpish adventure, but with an intensity and dramatic style that hadn't been seen since the '40s. Batman wasn't kidding around any more. These guys set the tone for the next couple of decades, and their influence (not just on Batman, but on superheroes in general) is still felt to this day.
