Check out what other folks picked here. My choice for today is...
Stan Lee and Steve Ditko
Strange Tales #130-146
For pure suspense, this one's hard to beat. Doctor Strange on the run, relentlessly pursued by Mordo and Dormammu as he tries to chase down the secret of "Eternity". Along the way, Doc has to overcome both external threats and his own preconceptions in order to triumph. The big showdown comes down to, of all things, a fistfight between Strange and Dormammu, a neat bit of irony. And a stark contrast is drawn between Strange's honor and Mordo's treachery, which in the end even Dormammu can't stomach. Ditko is at his hallucinogenic best, taking his expressive characters through various earthly and unearthly realms at a breakneck pace. Stan's dialogue does a great job highlighting Strange's struggle and enhancing the sense of urgency and menace. Spider-Man ain't nothing to sneeze at, but for me, this Doctor Strange saga is Lee and Ditko at their peak.
