3. John Byrne / Terry Austin - I used to count the days, waiting for the new issue of X-Men. Every issue was an event. Byrne hit that perfect "sweet spot" between the classical approach of a Buscema or Romita, and the stylish exuberance of an Adams or Steranko. His heroes lived and breathed, but were still larger than life. Austin rendered every line with laser-like precision and clarity, setting the standard for what modern superhero art should look like.
