More of our favorite short-run comics series!

And my pick for #3...

3. The Cat
(4 issues, 1972-1973)

Part of Marvel's short-lived experiment with having female-led series written by female writers, I thought this was the strongest of the bunch. Linda Fite and Marie Severin came up with a superhero in the classic Marvel style, with drama and angst and a dash of sarcastic wit. The origin story had a strong feminist subtext, with timid young housewife Greer Nelson finding a new strength and purpose in life after the death of her overly-protective husband. After two very strong issues, the book lost a little ground with #3, and #4 was an obvious rush job. Apparently, Fite decided to leave the comics industry, and Marvel decided it was easier to cancel the book than try to find a replacement. It's a shame...based on those first two excellent issues, if the original creative team could have been kept together, I think this coulda been a contender.
