Physics Of The Future
by Michio Kaku
4 of 5 stars

An intriguing book, full of the wonder and potential of the future. Kaku's writing is entertaining and accessible to the layman, sprinkled with pop culture references as he lays out current trends in technology and projects where things might go in the next century. His vision of the future looks a lot like an episode of "The Jetsons", but it's all thoroughly documented and based on research projects going on right now. And just when you think he's a little too pie-in-the-sky, he gets philosophical and wrestles with some of the social, political, and ethical challenges that will come with all these amazing advances. The next few decades should be really interesting, for better or worse...

Drift
by Rachel Maddow
5 of 5 stars

Well-thought-out, exhaustively researched, and written with insight and more than a little dark humor. Maddow argues persuasively that the last 50 years have seen Presidents from both parties finding increasingly devious and despicable ways to wage war without having to worry about Congressional approval or public opinion. She lays out in meticulous detail where things went wrong, and what steps need to be taken to correct course. Essential reading.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
by Stieg Larsson
3 of 5 stars

I honestly can't decide if I liked this book or not. The tone is all over the map. Long stretches of it are very dry, as Blomkvist slowly pieces together evidence -- realistic, but not very compelling. Then at other points it abruptly turns lurid and over-the-top violent. Protagonists Blomkvist and Salander are developed well, but the "villains" are thin cliches. On the other hand, the mystery is cleverly constructed, and the themes of abuse of power and systemic victimization of women come across very strongly. I'm interested enough that I plan to read the sequel, so I guess that's a qualified recommendation.
