Episode 4:
"Hail, Emperor Penguin!"
(Partly inspired by Batman #257 by Denny O'Neil, and Blue Devil Annual #1 by Gary Cohn and Dan Mishkin)
Roll Call: Bucky, Captain Republican, Chemical Lad, Mr. Roboto
The Penguin's latest money-making scheme involved the obscure nation of Swawak, a tiny island country off the coast of India. The nation's monarch, King Peeble III, had recently died, leaving his 10-year-old son Peeble IV in charge. During this awkward transition of power, the Penguin deduced, the nation would be easy pickings. Swawak as a nation had no great resources or wealth, but it was rumored that Peeble III had a large personal fortune hidden away in his palace.
Assaulting the King's castle, the Penguin and his crew were opposed by a handful of guards armed with swords and bows, plus a convocation of trained eagles, controlled by the psychic Birdmaster. The loyal troopers put up a valiant fight, but in the end were no match for the super-villains. A search of the castle revealed that the only other people remaining were young Peeble IV, and a single slave girl named Alita. Peeble confirmed that his father had a stash of wealth somewhere within the castle, but Peeble III had died before revealing its location to him. The rest of the staff and government officials abandoned him when they realized that Peeble IV could not pay them.
Undeterred, the Penguin announced that they would search for the treasure in the morning, tearing the castle apart if necessary. In the meantime, they would enjoy the fine food and luxurious accomodations. Late that night, Alita was seen sneaking into the Penguin's room. Not wanting to interfere in their boss' good time, the villains thought little of it, until a few hours later, when Alita was seen sneaking towards the entrance to the castle, holding a master key she had apparently lifted from the "distracted" Penguin.
Before they could stop her, Alita -- who was really Talia, the daughter of R'as Al-Ghul -- had opened the front gate, letting in her confederates from the League of Assassins: the martial arts master Bronze Tiger, Merlyn the archer, and the notorious Sportsmaster. They, too, were after Peeble's treasure, but the Penguin's crew wasn't about to give it up easily. The battle was a close one, but one by one, the Assassins fell, until only Talia remained standing. She had acquired a map showing the location of the castle's riches, which she gave up in exchange for her freedom.
The map led the villains straight to the secret treasure vault, but there was one more obstacle: One of Peeble's ancestors was a powerful magician, and he had bound a powerful demon to the chamber to serve as a guard. As soon as the villains entered, the arch-demon Nebiros and his minions appeared and attacked. Nebiros was half-embedded in the castle wall, preventing him from escaping his duty, but his slashing tail and debilitating eye-beams could reach anywhere within the chamber. His demon minions were not powerful, but their numbers served to wear the villains down, and they served another purpose: whenever Nebiros was injured, he would grab and devour one of the demons, giving him a small boost of health.
Still recovering from their earlier battles, the Penguin's crew had a tough time of it. Bucky was knocked out, and his mentor Captain Republican was on his last legs. Chemical Lad and Mr. Roboto likewise sustained heavy damage. But they persevered, and eventually Nebiros ran out of minions to draw healing from, and he was destroyed, banishing him (at least for now) from the mortal plane.
In the aftermath, the Penguin claimed the treasure, and briefly considered crowning himself Emperor of Swawak, but decided that he preferred life as a kingpin of crime in Gotham City.
(The player characters earned 3 character points each, giving them a total of 112.)
