Episode 5:
"Requiem for Four Canaries!"
(Partly inspired by The Brave and the Bold #166 by Michael Fleisher, and Justice League of America #61 by Gardner Fox)
Roll Call: Bucky, Captain Republican, Chemical Lad, Mr. Roboto
With his new gang well-established, and with a nest-egg of capital to work with, The Penguin decided it was time to settle some scores. His most recent prison sentence had been the result of an ill-fated scheme masterminded by the mad scientist Dr. Destiny. Destiny had recruited a team of villains, including the Penguin, to take on the Justice League. It hadn't worked out, but to add insult to injury, several of the villains threw him under the bus (Mr. Roboto: "That must've been difficult") by claiming that he, not Destiny, was the one behind it all. They'd gotten reduced sentences for "cooperating", and he'd gotten the book thrown at him.
Penguin's orders to his minions were simple: "I want them dead."
First on the hit list was Ira Quimby, aka "I.Q.", a criminal who used high-tech inventions in his robberies. He was running with his own gang now, consisting of the ghostly Shadow Thief, the energy-blasting Monocle, and the earth-manipulating Matter Master. The Penguin's crew caught them at the scene of their latest robbery in Midway City, and made short work of them. However, they hesitated to finish off I.Q. themselves, and instead brought him back to the Penguin. He obliged them by putting a bullet from his umbrella-gun into Quimby's head, and then re-emphasized that from here on out, they were to finish the targets off themselves.
The next man on Penguin's list was the Australian rogue known as Captain Boomerang. They tracked him down to Central City, just as several members of "Team Flash" (the body-morphing Elongated Man, chilling Killer Frost, and shockwave-producing Vibe) were about to apprehend him. In the subsequent 3-way battle, Penguin's crew was once again triumphant, and this time administered the coup de grace to Boomerang themselves.
Target #3 was the laser-wielding villain Dr. Light. The Penguin had gotten a tip leading to his hideout in Calvin City. But as the crew was closing in, a portal appeared in mid-air, and they were confronted by the time-traveling heroes called "The Legends of Tomorrow" (leader Rip Hunter, cyborg Steel, animal-powered Vixen, and nature-controlling Isis). Hunter insisted that Dr. Light must live, because one of his descendents was destined to save the world in the far future. Undeterred, the villains attacked. This was the most difficult battle yet, as both Steel and a gorilla-powered Vixen delivered punishing blows, while Isis summoned a thunderstorm to rain down lightning bolts on her foes (Rip Hunter, meanwhile, armed with only an ordinary rifle, was not much of a factor). But in the end, Penguin's men triumphed. Chemical Lad did take the time-travelers' warning to heart, however, and made a point of obtaining a sperm sample from Dr. Light's unconscious body before killing him. The future was safe...probably.
Last but not least was the mastermind himself, Dr. Destiny, who had been confined to Arkham Asylum in lieu of doing prison time. A combination of bribes and forged documents allowed the villains to access his cell while the guards looked the other way. But Destiny was far from helpless; his ability to turn dreams into reality allowed him to conjure up "perfect opponents" to protect him from his attackers: Captain Republican and Bucky found themselves facing "The Americommando and Rusty", while Mr. Roboto was confronted by "Mr. Atom", and Chemical Lad squared off against "Chemo". The dream-enemies proved to be very effective fighters, and at one point, both Bucky and Mr. Roboto were knocked out of the fight. But Captain Republican and Chemical Lad, both on their last legs, managed to eke out a victory. The destruction of his dream warriors caused Dr. Destiny to go catatonic, and he was easily dispatched. The Penguin's revenge was complete.
