DC Villains
Episode 7:
"Batman's Gangland Guardians!"
(Partly inspired by Batman #201, "Batman's Gangland Guardians!" by Gardner Fox)
Roll Call: Bucky, Captain Republican, Chemical Lad, Mr. Roboto
The Penguin reported that Inter-Gang (the Metropolis-based mob that they clashed with back in Episode 2) was once again trying to establish a foothold in Gotham City. This time their plans were even more ambitious: Take out Gotham's greatest defender, the Batman. Inter-Gang had hired a small army of mercenaries and assassins, and planned to stage several phony "crimes" in order to lure Batman into an ambush.
Captain Republican suggested that they should just sit back and let the two enemies fight it out. But the Penguin feared that, if Inter-Gang actually managed to kill Batman, their greater numbers would allow them to take control of crime in the city, and the Penguin and company would be forced out. No, as much as it galled him to say it, they would have to get to the sites of the ambushes first -- and make sure Batman survived. "If anyone's going to ice the Bat," the Penguin vowed, "it's going to be me, when the time is right!"
The first ambush was to take place at the Gotham City Museum of History. Penguin's crew arrived early, but the place seemed deserted. Suddenly, several of what they thought were statues of historical figures sprang to life: A woman wearing the garb and bearing the magical staff of Cleopatra, the robotic warrior called Samuroid, the old West bandit turned high-tech marauder Terra-Man, and a brute wielding an electrified hammer calling himself Thor. It was difficult fight, especially after Cleopatra managed to magically seduce Mr. Roboto, but the Penguin's men managed to defeat the Inter-Gang mercenaries and clear out before the Caped Crusader even arrived.
The second planned ambush was set to happen two days later at the Happyland amusement park, in the "Haunted House" attraction. Again, the Inter-Gang assassins had taken the place of the animatronic monsters in the house, and jumped the villains as they arrived: The vampiric Count Dragorin, his werewolf associate Lupek, the ancient mummy named Kha-Ef-Re, and the stitched-together corpse called the Patchwork Man. The Penguin's crew defeated them without too much difficulty, despite the fact that Lupek's heightened senses could easily pinpoint the invisible Bucky, and that Kha-Ef-Re was able to absorb their energy attacks and grow larger. Again, they vacated the premises before Batman arrived.
The third and final ambush was planned for a few days later, in an abandoned warehouse near Gotham Harbor. This time, however, the villains were late to the scene, and arrived to see the aftermath of a fierce battle, with large numbers of unconscious Inter-Gang troopers. Moving in further, they saw the unconscious form of Batman being carried off by the last few of the Inter-Gang Garrison, and a squad of assassins: Batman's old foe Deadshot, the flamethrower-wielding Scorcher, a mysterious alien with a high-tech spear calling himself Devilance, and the leader of the Inter-Gang incursion force, the aptly-named Steel Hand.
This was the most difficult battle yet, with heavy casualties on both sides. Captain Republican and Mr. Roboto were both knocked out, as were Deadshot and Steel Hand. When Steel Hand went down, the remaining Garrison retreated, leaving Bucky and Chemical Lad to face Devilance and Scorcher. Finally, Devilance succumbed to Bucky's Health-Siphoning power, and a badly-battered Scorcher surrendered. The villains left the defeated Inter-Gang mercenaries for Batman to find when he regained consciousness. Chemical Lad couldn't resist leaving a note, telling the Darknight Detective that he owed his life to the Penguin.
