DC Villains #12: Servants of DEMON

Episode 12:
"Servants oF DEMON!"
[Partly inspired by: Superman #191 - "Prisoner of DEMON" by Jim Shooter and Justice League #2 - "Make War No More!" by Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis]
Roll Call:
Bucky
Captain Republican
Chemical Lad
Mr. Roboto
The team settled into their new digs at Belle Reve Prison in Louisiana. Not quite as fancy as their rooms above the Iceberg Lounge, but still better than an actual prison (Chemical Lad pointed out that the food wasn't as good, either -- you could say a lot of things about the Penguin, but he always laid out a good spread).
Amanda Waller briefed them on their first mission. A new terrorist organization calling itself DEMON (Destruction Extortion Murder and Overthrow of Nations) had appeared operating out of the Middle East. So far, their attacks had been small and local, but there was intel indicating that they were planning something much bigger. Waller wanted the villains to infiltrate the organization, gain their confidence, and then capture or kill the leader. "With your reputation as ruthless killers, you should have no trouble being accepted in their ranks."
The team made contact with an American terror cell known to be associated with DEMON, and sure enough, they were enthusiastically brought on board. To test their loyalty, they were sent to the small nation of Bialya, ruled by the dictator Rumaan Harjavti. Harjavti wore a medallion called the Star of Sinsubhani, an ancient jewel of great historical and political importance, as a badge of his office. Stealing the Star would be a great propaganda victory for DEMON, but they had hesitated to act because of the rumors that Harjavti was guarded by some kind of alien super-beings. But now that they had a team of super-villains on their side...
The crew assaulted the royal palace of Bialya, and sure enough, they were confronted by a quartet of beings from the planet Angor: The tiny, winged Blue Jay, fast-moving Jack B. Quick, the mystic Silver Sorceress, and the self-proclaimed storm god Wandjina. A fierce battle followed. Not liking Jack B. Quick's ability to assault them all simultaneously [4 actions per round with his Super-Speed], the villains focused fire on him, hobbled him with a lucky leg shot, and then knocked him out completely (Jack: "I didn't see that coming"). Blue Jay proved to be a bit of a "glass cannon"; his energy-blasts packed a big punch, but he was physically rather puny, and went down quickly. Wandjina was the Angorians' powerhouse, dealing massive damage with his magical axe, but he was eventually worn down as well. Silver Sorceress lasted the longest, using various spells to slow the villains down, but once her Force Field had been breached, she too was defeated. They found Harjavti hiding in his bedroom, forcibly acquired the Star of Sinsubhani, and made their way back to America.
[Loot Drops: Silver Sorceress' Spellbook (Arsenal, with Healing, Paralysis Ray, and Reflection spells to choose from), Wandjina's Axe (Bonus to Hand-to-Hand damage, plus a Sonic Blast carrier attack).]
The DEMON terrorists were very pleased, and revealed that there was more to the Star of Sinsubhani than they had let on -- it was actually an alien artifact of great power, but it would take someone of great scientific brilliance to figure out how to turn it into a weapon. The person they had in mind was a bona fide genius, but not someone who would be missed if they suddenly "disappeared": the notorious Dr. Thaddeus Bodog Sivana.
Traveling to Fawcett City, the villains found Sivana in a secret underground lab, along with several allies: the brutish Ibac, the fire-demon Sabbac, and the fearsome(?) Mr. Banjo. Sivana had also brought several of the frog-like Glompers from planet Venus to serve as bodyguards. As the World's Wickedest Scientist was not inclined to go quietly, the fight began in earnest.
After Banjo managed to temporarily mesmerize Chemical Lad with his music [Emotion Control], the team focused all their attacks on him, and the beefy bluegrass musician fell quickly. After that, they correctly deduced that the frail and elderly Sivana, despite his protective Force Field and Death Ray pistol, was not much of a threat, and concentrated on the demon-powered Ibac and Sabbac, while the Glompers harassed them with their sticky tongues [Grapnel] and poison bite [Natural Weaponry, plus a contact attack from their Chemical Body]. Ibac in particular was a tough opponent, shrugging off most damage and dealing heavy punishment with his super-strong punches. Mr. Roboto and Bucky both fell to his fists, but Captain Republican managed to cast a Paralysis spell from Silver Sorceress' spellbook that neutralized both Ibac and Sivana [Ibac was almost out of Power Points by then, and Sivana didn't have a lot to start with, so they both missed their saves].
As Sivana was turned over to DEMON, he took the defeat with equanimity, admitting that he rather relished the challenge of turning the Star of Sinsubhani into a weapon of mass destruction.
[Loot Drops: Dr. Sivana's Death Ray (Death Touch), Sabbac's Robe (Flame Aura).]
[I had one more encounter planned, the showdown with DEMON's leader, but the session was running long, so we decided to table it until next week.]
[The player characters earned 3 character points each, giving them a total of 136.]
