Mr. Roboto

Amanda Waller gathered her Squad for a briefing on Gorilla City, the nation of intelligent apes hidden away in a remote part of Africa. Solovar, their King, had always maintained friendly relations to the U.S.. But the aging monarch was preparing to step down in favor of his nephew, Prince Ulgo. And Ulgo was less of a known quantity, with rumors that he had socialist leanings and ties to Russia. It was decided that it would be against U.S. interests for Ulgo to take the throne, and it would be the Suicide Squad's job to prevent it.

As a replacement, the government was eyeing someone who had attempted to take the throne of Gorilla City before, and had both the power and influence to keep it: Gorilla Grodd. Despite his nefarious history, it was believed that, with sufficient bribery, he could be counted on to maintain Solovar's pro-USA policies. The one problem: He was currently incarcerated in Iron Heights Prison, after his latest skirmish with The Flash. Trying to get him released through official channels would raise too much suspicion, so the Squad would have to go in and liberate him the hard way.

Waller predicted (arranged for?) a mass escape attempt at Iron Heights that very evening, and sure enough, the Squad arrived to a scene of utter chaos, as guards and inmates battled for control. It was easy enough to slip into the maximum security wing, but when they got to Grodd's cell, they found the sedated simian being carried off by a quartet of escaped villains: Captain Cold, Heat Wave, Mirror Master, and the Pied Piper.

Heat Wave immediately recognized the newcomers as "those bastards who killed Captain Boomerang" (see Episode #5). Chemical Lad responded flippantly, "Captain Who?", and the battle was on. The Squad were pummeled by blocks of ice, gouts of flame, mirror-lasers, and sonic beams, but ultimately overpowered the quartet of rogues.

[Loot Drops: Captain Cold's Gun (Ice Blast), Mirror Master's Mirror (Force Field).]

They managed to slip Grodd's comatose form out of Iron Heights and back to Belle Reve. Grodd regained consciousness, but the prison had also surgically implanted an electronic device in his skull that neutralized his mental powers. Waller promised to help him remove the device, and seat him on the throne of Gorilla City, in exchange for a promise of future cooperation with the U.S.. Grodd agreed, with the proviso that he would still try to kill the Flash whenever he got the chance (Waller replied with a shrug, "He can take care of himself.").

The tools Grodd needed to remove the electronic mind-blocker were in his secret laboratory, located not far from Gorilla City. The Squad accompanied him to the location, only to find that the laboratory had been broken into by a gang of criminals. Led by the psychic genius Ultra-Humanite, Karmak the Beast-Bomb, Giganta, and the Mod Gorilla Boss were there to steal Grodd's advanced technology for themselves.

Ultra's psychic blasts, Giganta's enormous fists, and the Gorilla Boss' tommy-gun inflicted heavy damage on the Squad, and a defeated Karmak managed to set off a bomb that caught everyone, friend and foe, in its blast, but the Squad finally emerged, battered but triumphant.

[Loot Drops: Karmak's Bomb (Power Blast with Area Effect), Giganta's Bracelet (Heightened Expertise).]

Grodd managed to remove the mental blocker from his skull, and sent the Squad to Gorilla City to take out Solovar and Ulgo while he amped up his psychic powers to "persuade" the City's citizens to accept his rule. Using a secret tunnel that Grodd had prepared for his own clandestine comings and goings, they emerged inside the palace, only to find that Ulgo's coronation was being attended by several African super-heroes: Batwing, B'wana Beast, Nubia, and Prince Ra-Man. The frail Solovar and terrified Ulgo found cover as the battle ensued.

Batwing's radar equipment allowed him to zero in on the invisible Bucky, but he was taken out early, paralyzed by the poison gas the team had scavenged from their previous battle with Kobra. B'wana Beast pounded Mr. Roboto with super-strong fists, while the tigers he had summoned harried the rest of the team. Nubia's magical sword dealt heavy damage to Captain Republican, while Prince Ra-Man avoided touching the acidic Chemical Lad, using his telekinesis to batter him from a safe distance. The palace guards circled the perimeter of the fray, taking shots with their energy-rifles.

But the Squad persevered, and slowly the odds changed. Once B'wana Beast was down, his tigers fled the scene, and eventually Gorilla Grodd managed to take control of the Guards, removing them from the equation. One by one, Ulgo's defenders fell. In the streets outside, the mind-controlled populace began cheering for their new overlord, Grodd. Solovar and Ulgo were taken into custody, no doubt to be "tried" and executed as enemies of the state, and the overthrow of Gorilla City was complete.

[Loot Drops: Batwing's Suit (Flight and Heightened Senses), B'wana Beast's Potion (Heightened Strength), Prince Ra-Man's Belt (Telekinesis).]
