12 Days of Classic Covers - Day 10

Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD #4
Jim Steranko
My background is in graphic design, so I'm predisposed towards covers that are not only nicely-drawn, but thoughtfully assembled. There's so many smart details here: the montage of photographs, op-art patterns, and high-contrast drawings in the background creates a sort of newspaper/documentary feel, a sense of a world in peril. And then there's the fully-colored figure of Nick Fury (and his bullet-ridden logo), standing firm against the chaos. I love that the obligatory Marvel trade dress and corner picture are also left uncolored... a small touch that really helps unify the cover. Without having any specific "story content", this cover nonetheless has a powerful psychological impact, setting the tone and getting the reader pumped up for the action to come.
