You can get a free download of the first issue of CEREBUS - HIGH SOCIETY in various formats (PDF, ePub, CBZ). Includes lots of bonus material -- Notes, sketches, and correspondence from the era. There's also a video version with Sim reading the dialogue, which is pretty entertaining.

This is awful...one of the all-time great graphic novels, up in smoke. Please pass this on to any original art dealers/collectors you know. With luck, maybe the book can be reconstructed.

Found this while I was going through some old art:

This was an ad I put together to promote Dave Sim's "Spirits of Independence Tour" back in 1995. I exhibited at the Columbus, Wilmette, and Pittsburgh shows. As I recall, the turnout was pretty underwhelming, but it was a blast commiserating with like-minded cartoonists. For a brief moment it felt like we were part of a genuine Comics Revolution that would overthrow the Big Two and create a Self-Publishing Paradise. You can guess how that worked out.

Still, it's nice to look over this list of hot young self-publishers and realize that most of them are still around and doing creative work of one kind or another (Drew Hayes sadly passed away a few years back). And thanks to the new medium of webcomics, we have a whole new generation of cartoonists who take their creative autonomy for granted. Of course, finding a way to make that work pay is still a challenge, but some things never change...

Cerebus #101
Dave Sim & Gerhard

Another series that sported a LOT of terrific covers. But this one jumped out at me; it's kind of cryptic, but still evocative and intriguing. I love those huge eye-catching letters that nonetheless manage to be a balanced and integral part of the overall illustration. The looming type and stark black background combine to make a simple image of a hat and a wooden box seem somehow eerie and portentious (which, in the context of the story, they definitely are). Sim took a lot of risks and broke a lot of rules over the course of Cerebus' 300-issue run, and most of them paid off.
